“Castle of the Spiders,” translated Zahra in a hushed whisper, her eyes wide and sparkling.
They were all standing at the entrance and she was straining her neck to see the entire web masterpiece.
“I wonder how many spiders worked together to make that web… or maybe it was one huge spider!”
Yasser let out a whimper. He pressed his face into Grandfather’s tummy and tried really hard not to throw up. He was terrified of spiders. He had
never told anyone, but whenever he saw one scuttle along the floor or hang suspended in mid-air, a chill would run down his spine.
Grandfather gently pealed him away and knelt down so that he could look him in the eye. “What’s wrong Yasser? Are you okay?”
Yasser shook his head. “I… I… I don’t like spiders.”
“But they are amazing!” Zahra said. “They are so clever and look at the beautiful webs they make!”
Grandfather looked at Zahra and then back at Yasser sympathetically. “Yasser, most spiders are harmless and all the spiders at this exhibition are
safe.”
“I know that,” said Yasser. “And I also know I’m waaaay bigger than them. Except maybe the spider that made that web, and I’m not afraid of snakes or
bees, it just spiders.” He let out a wail. “But I can’t help it. I really, really don’t like them.”
“That’s okay too,” Grandfather said. “ A lot of people feel uneasy around spiders.”
“I don’t,” said Zahra.
Both Grandfather and Yasser looked over at Zahra.
“I didn’t mean to make you feel bad Yasser!” she said apologetically. “I only meant that I can help you. I’ll walk ahead and if any spiders come near
us, I’ll speak to them so they don’t come near you.”
“Thank you, Zahra.” Yasser smiled at the thought of his baby sister protecting him. He went to her and gave a quick hug. “I’m sure you’ll be a big help.”
“I’ll try my best,” Zahra promised sincerely. She had felt how fast Yasser’s heart was beating and knew he really was scared.
“Let’s all take a few deep breaths to calm ourselves before we go meet these wondrous creatures,”
Grandfather suggested. He counted to three and they all took deep breaths through their noses and let them out through their mouths.
“I do feel a bit better,” Yasser said. “But we haven’t actually seen a spider yet….”
“Let me tell you one more secret to being calm and peaceful,” Grandfather said, smiling. “Allah tells us in Surah Ra’ad that ‘Truly in the remembrance of
Allah do the hearts find peace’.”
